Debunking 10 Common Hair Myths: What You Need to Know

Let’s face it, hair can be a fickle friend. One day it’s gloriously smooth and shiny, the next it’s a tangled mess rebelling against all styling attempts. Throughout the years, we’ve been bombarded with hair care “wisdom” passed down from generation to generation. But are these tips actually true, or just age-old myths leading us astray? Buckle up, because we’re about to unravel the truth behind some of the most common hair myths!

Truth: Hair growth is determined by factors such as genetics, health, and diet, not by how often you cut it. Regular trims help to remove split ends and keep hair looking healthy, but they don’t affect the rate of hair growth, which typically averages about half an inch per month.

Truth: Washing your hair daily can strip it of natural oils, leading to dryness and potential damage. Your hair type and lifestyle should determine the frequency of shampooing. For some, washing every other day or even once or twice a week may be sufficient to keep hair clean and healthy.

Truth: Dandruff is often caused by an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia, not by a dry scalp. An oily scalp can exacerbate dandruff. You can use anti-dandruff shampoos containing zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, or selenium sulfide to get rid of the condition.  

Truth: Plucking grey hair will not cause more to grow back in its place. Each hair follicle produces a single hair, so removing one grey hair will not affect others. However, plucking can damage the hair follicle and potentially lead to infection or scarring.

Truth: While chronic stress can contribute to premature greying over time, hair doesn’t turn grey overnight. Each hair grows with its colour determined by pigment cells in the follicle. Once hair has grown out of the scalp, its colour doesn’t change.

Truth: Excessive brushing can cause more harm than good by leading to breakage and damage. Gentle brushing to detangle hair is sufficient. Use a wide-tooth comb or a brush with soft bristles to minimize damage and promote scalp health.

Truth: Once a hair has split, it can’t be permanently repaired. Products claiming to “heal” split ends typically just temporarily bind the hair together. The only real solution for split ends is to cut them off.

Truth: Hair does not “adapt” to shampoo. If a shampoo works well for your hair type, there’s no need to change it. However, if you notice changes in your hair or scalp condition, it might be worth trying a different product to address new needs or concerns.

Truth: Hair products can temporarily alter the appearance and manageability of hair but cannot permanently change its natural texture. Treatments like relaxers or perms chemically alter the hair structure but will gradually grow out as new hair grows in.

Truth: While air drying can be gentler on hair, it’s not always better, especially if done incorrectly. Wet hair is more susceptible to damage, so if you air dry, make sure to avoid vigorous towel drying. Using a blow dryer on a low heat setting can be safe if done properly and can help prevent issues like mould or scalp infections caused by prolonged dampness.
