Build Your Best Skin Yet: A Step-by-Step Skincare Routine Guide

Let’s face it, skincare can be overwhelming. With aisles overflowing with products and countless online routines, it’s easy to feel lost. But fear not! As a dermatologist, I’m here to shed light on creating a personalized skincare routine that works for your unique skin.

First Things First: Know Your Skin Type

It all starts with understanding your skin type. Are you oily, dry, combination, or sensitive? While these categories provide a good starting point, remember your skin isn’t a monolith. It can be oily in the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) and dry on the cheeks, or sensitive to certain ingredients.

Here's a quick guide:
  • Oily Skin: Characterized by shiny, greasy, oily substance on cheeks, forehead and nose. Oily skin has enlarged pores and can be more prone to breakouts.
  • Dry Skin: Feels tight, stretchy, and flaky, and may show fine lines prematurely.
  • Combination Skin: A mix of oily and dry areas with T zone i.e forehead and nose area remains oily and cheeks remain dry
  • Sensitive Skin: Easily irritated, becomes reddish and dry by harsh ingredients or changes in weather.
  • Normal skin: If none of the above things are present, then you have normal skin.

Tailoring Your Routine

Now comes the fun part – Layering. Following a dedicated day and night skincare routine has tons of benefits. It helps to slow down your ageing process, and decreases chances of pigmentation, wrinkles and fine lines.

The Golden Rule: Thinnest to Thickest

The key to successful layering lies in consistency. Generally, apply products from the thinnest to the thickest
to ensure proper absorption. Here’s a breakdown of the typical layering order.

1. Makeup Remover:

Usage: At night, before sleeping.
It does what it says on the tin, even removing the makeup residue you can’t see. You can use oil-free and micellar technology to remove any trace of heavy-duty makeup while leaving skin feeling soft, not stripped.

2. Cleanser:

Usage: Twice per day, morning and night.
Start with a clean canvas. Washing your face twice daily removes dirt, oil, and makeup without stripping your skin's natural moisture barrier. Choose a gentle cleanser (foam, gel or cream cleanser) formulated for your skin type. To cleanse your skin, simply apply a small amount of cleanser to your face and neck. Massage it in circular motions. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and pat your skin dry with a clean towel. Avoid using hot water, as this can strip the skin of its natural oils and cause dryness and irritation.

3. Exfoliate:

Usage: Once in a week or in 10 days.
The benefits of exfoliating include removing dead skin cells from the outer layer of your face helping you avoid breakouts. Sun exposure, pollution, stress, fatigue, perspiration, and hormonal factors may cause a person’s skin to become blemished, damaged, or prematurely aged. Cleansing and exfoliating the skin both serve an important purpose in maintaining a healthy, glowing complexion.

4. Toner (Optional):

Usage: Twice per day, morning and night.
Toners help balance your skin's pH level and remove any lingering impurities. Today’s toners and facial mists support the effectiveness of cleansers by adding replenishing ingredients that support your skin’s health. However, some skin types may not need a toner especially dry and acne-prone ones. Also, avoid using alcohol-based toner as they tend to cause dryness and can damage your skin barrier

5. Treatments & Serums:

Usage: Twice per day, morning and night.
The next step in your skincare routine is to apply spot treatments or face serums that you may be using to address specific skin concerns. These lightweight formulas contain concentrated active ingredients to target specific concerns like acne, hyperpigmentation, or signs of ageing. Apply thinnest like vitamin C serum or niacinamide serum if you have uneven skin tone. if you have If you have acne-prone skin, apply salicylic acid serum or niacinamide serum to be used first and then follow it up with the next steps. Individuals with dry skin can add hyaluronic acid serum to their skincare routine.

6. Eye Cream:

Usage: Twice per day, morning and night.
Some areas require a lighter touch. The skin around your eye area is seven times thinner than the rest of your face and needs to be treated with special care. Regular eye cream application not only maintains the health, thickness and elasticity of this delicate area, but it also reduces the look of fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness.

7. Moisturizer:

Usage: Twice per day, morning and night.
Any skin care regimen must include moisturizing since it keeps the skin nourished and hydrated. Additionally, it can aid in shielding the skin's protective layer from pollutants and UV rays, as well as environmental stresses. Lotions, gels, creams, and oil-based moisturizers are just a few of the many options available.

It's critical to select a moisturizer that suits your skin type. For example, utilizing a lightweight, oil-free gel or liquid moisturizer that won't clog pores can be beneficial if you have oily or acne-prone skin. Use a cream-based moisturizer to help lock in moisture more effectively if you have dry or sensitive skin.

8. Sunscreen Daytime Only:

Usage: Daytime Only and reapplication every four hours
Daily sunscreen use is non-negotiable! It helps protect the skin against the damaging rays that contribute to skin irritation, premature ageing, pigmentation and the formation of certain skin cancers. Year-round, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen or SPF moisturizer to shield your skin from exposure. Apply a generous amount of sunscreen to your face and neck, and massage it in until it is fully absorbed. Make sure to pay extra attention to areas that are most prone to sun damage, such as the nose, ears, and lips.

9. Lip balm:

Usage: Whenever needed
Give your lips the nighttime care they deserve by gently exfoliating them once a week with a gentle sugar-based lip scrub. Then, hydrate them further with a nourishing lip balm or mask that contains hyaluronic acid or shea butter. If you want to get extra hydration, try an overnight lip treatment. This routine will guarantee that your lips are hydrated and ready to face the day at dawn. U can also use lip balms containing SPF to protect your lips from harmful rays.

The sequence of application ensures optimal absorption and efficacy of each product. Although there is no
hard and fast rule to a skincare routine order, you must remember the essential trio: Cleanse, Moisturize, and
Protect.

Also, remember, “Consistency is Key!”

Developing a new routine takes time. Don’t expect overnight miracles. Stick to your routine consistently for at least 4-6 weeks to see results. If you experience irritation, stop using the product and consult your dermatologist.
