Stretch marks are streaks or lines that appear on the skin when it undergoes rapid stretching due to factors like pregnancy, weight gain, puberty, or certain medical conditions. These marks are initially red, purple, or dark brown but gradually fade to a lighter, white colour over time. Stretch marks occur when the skin’s elastic fibres are stretched beyond their capacity, causing damage to the dermis. Although they are harmless and don’t affect health, they can impact self-esteem.
